URGENT ANNOUNCEMENT - LILLE SHOW POSTPONED!

Placebo have had to postpone the first show of their arena tour in Lille this Friday night (29th September).

Brian Molko came down with severe tonsillitis on Sunday night. He saw a specialist on Tuesday and was immediately admitted to hospital where he spent Tuesday and Wednesday night on an intravenous drip. Brian was released from hospital this morning (Thursday) and is under doctors orders to rest for 48 hours. His doctor has ruled out a show on Friday night.

Brian is now fighting to be fit for Saturday’s show in Lille. At present, we very much hope this show will go ahead and, subject to doctors ok, this is our intention. Please check here for updates regarding any further necessary cancellations.

Placebo very much regret having to cancel a show and are aware how disappointing this is for the fans who’ve bought tickets and have been waiting a long time to see the band. Brian is devastated at the timing of this illness and apologises to all the fans. It’s particularly disappointing as this was the very first show of the band’s autumn European arena tour.

We will however be re-scheduling the show and all tickets will remain valid for the rescheduled date. Please check here for details. For those that wish to have their tickets refunded, please contact their point of purchase.

Thanks to all for your understanding.

10th ANNIVERSARY REISSUE OF DEBUT ALBUM - OUT NOW

On 25th September, Placebo will release a 10th anniversary re-mastered version of their classic eponymous debut.

‘Placebo’ was originally released in July 1996 and went on to become one of THE seminal rock albums of the 1990s. The first single from the album, ‘Teenage Angst’, charted respectably at number 30. It was the second single from the album - ‘Nancy Boy’ - which would set the Top 5 of the UK chart ablaze. ‘Nancy Boy’ was a rallying call-to-arms for outrageous and androgynous boys and girls; an antidote and two-fingered gesture to the laddism of Britpop, resulting in a blistering TOTP performance. ‘Placebo’ went on to go Platinum (300,000 sales) in the UK and sell over 750,000 worldwide, cementing the band’s place as one the truly great guitar-pop bands of the 1990s, which continues to this day - recent album ‘Meds’ has sold one million-to-date, taking the band’s total sales to eight million.

The album re-issue will feature the original album re-mastered, plus exclusive, previously unavailable demo ‘Paycheck’, and fan club only demo ‘Flesh Mechanic’. Also included are b-sides ‘Drowning By Numbers’, which was the b-side to Placebo long since deleted second single ‘Come Home’ - released on Deceptive Records; and ‘Slackerbitch’, which appeared on ‘Nancy Boy’. The second disc will be a DVD made up of all the promo videos from the album and previously unavailable live and TV performances, including a Glastonbury 1998 performance of ‘Lady of The Flowers’, and a hilarious Big Breakfast roadshow performance of ‘Teenage Angst’.
See below for full track listing.

This summer Placebo has headlined 11 European festivals and triumphantly return to the UK to make their fourth appearance at Reading Festival - also their 10th anniversary appearance – where they’ll be the penultimate band on the main stage on Sunday 27th August (as well as playing Leeds Festival on 26th), further proving their status as one of the UK’s most important and enduring bands.

Placebo rock Beijing

Placebo played the Beijing Pop Festival in Chao Yang Park, Beijing last Sunday, 9th September. The reaction to the show by the Beijing audience was incredible and even the promoter felt a piece of history was being made!

The band were completely overwhelmed by the reaction of the crowds.

Brian commented:

"Playing in a new country you never know what to expect, particularly in one whose culture is so different from our own.

The crowd blew our minds with their energy and generosity and the concert remains one of the most enjoyable of the year, if not the whole album campaign"

Infra-Red released 19.06.06 - update

After the urgent plea that was ‘Because I Want You', the second single from the album, ‘Infra Red’, further shows the maturity of the band’s song writing and Brian’s finely-honed storytelling. It is a classic Placebo single; understated verses and a euphoric, reaching chorus. It perfectly showcases an album where the band have returned to their roots, stripped away the layers and got to the heart of being a live, confident rock band.

Following the Top 10 success of ‘Meds’- Placebo’s most acclaimed album in five years, and a recent sold-out UK tour, the band will release ‘Infra-red’ on 19 June.

Introducing our very special guest Michael Stipe!

With only a few days to go now before the release of ‘Meds’ we thought we’d focus a little on our guest collaboration with Michael Stipe from REM. We have two guests featured on this album, the title track ‘Meds’ features an old friend of the band, Alison (aka VV) from The Kills. Our second collaboration features the great Michael Stipe on the track ‘Broken Promise’. Michael spent a day with the band at Snake Ranch studios in Chelsea back in July last year. He was a true professional and utterly charming as ever. His vocal performance on the day was something very special and clearly something he’d given a lot of thought to.

Watch another exclusive Placeboworld interview with Brian and Stefan as they describe the duets with Michael and Alison:

Windows Media Player: Low | High

RealPlayer - Low | High

Michael Stipe's comments on recording 'Broken Promise':

'We recorded in London. After we finished ‘Broken Promise’, I had a chance to listen to roughs of the other songs that the guys had been working on. I knew, 3 songs in, that it was a great record. We had a terrific time in the studio, everyone was there throughout the session and open to ideas, Brian and I sang side by side, which doesn’t happen often and created a cool energy for the track. I’m really honored to have been asked, and to be a part of this record.'

Placebo Pizza!

Placebo would like to say a big thank you to all of you who turned up for the ‘Because I Want You’ video shoot yesterday at Koko.

We were completely taken aback by the numbers that showed up and so grateful to you all for braving the very cold weather! We know many of you travelled a long way to get there. We are also very aware that many of you were turned away last night – literally hundreds of you. The band are truly sorry that you didn’t get into the venue.

We would like to re-iterate that the Koko had very strict health and safety regulations and numbers were always limited. We did make this clear in the announcement. Unfortunately the venue were unable to increase the capacity on the day despite our best efforts to persuade them to do so. If it had been up to the band, you would have all got in!

Thank you again – as always, we appreciate your unwavering support.

Placebo to co-headline the Isle of Wight Festival joined by special guests Goldfrapp

Placebo and Goldfrapp are joining The Prodigy for the opening night on Friday 9th June and tickets are now on sale.

The Isle Of Wight Festival 2006 will be the fifth festival since it’s reincarnation in 2002. Over the last few years David Bowie, R.E.M, Faithless, The Who, Supergrass, Razorlight, Travis and The Magic Numbers amongst many others, have taken to the stage in what is fast becoming one of the hottest festivals in the UK.

Described as ‘The Best Rock Band for a Decade’, Placebo will co-headline the opening night of the festival with The Prodigy. The band are one of Britain’s biggest selling artists with nearly a decade of hits under their belts. 2004 saw the release of their multi-platinum album ‘Once More With Feeling’ a collection of singles spanning 1996-2004, to celebrate the launch they played their biggest UK show to date, a sold out Wembley Arena. They are currently in the studio writing a new album for release in 2006.

Goldfrapp are the Mercury Award nominated duo, famous for their avant-garde electro-pop sound and their extravagant cabaret stage shows. Currently promoting their latest album ‘Supernature’, Goldfrapp are set to bring a sprinkling of glamour to the Isle Of Wight Festival.

The Isle of Wight Festivals at the end of the 1960’s were a series of legendary events featuring Bob Dylan, The Who, Free, The Doors, Joni Mitchell, Jefferson Airplane culminating in 1970 with 600,000 hippies descending on the island to see Jimi Hendrix perform his penultimate concert. As documented in the film ‘Message to Love’ and celebrated in songs such as Oasis’ ‘F***ing in the Bushes’, the event has played a major part in shaping the music festivals we know today and was the European answer to Woodstock.

The festival will take place from Friday 9th June – Sunday 11th June at Seaclose Park, Newport.
